The GRU would like to thank Georgia Southern University and especially Kurt Barnes for all the work they put into hosting this weekends Men and Women's GRU Collegiate rugby tournament. The tournament went well with the exception of a downpour on Saturday that threatened to end the entire tournament for everybody. After a 2 1/2 hour rain delay the tournament continued.
Men's Tournament
In men's pool play Kennesaw State won their respective pool as did GA Southern and Georgia Tech. The fourth place seed was a wild card seed. The University of Georgia received this after loosing a pool play match to GA Southern University 17-7. The semi-final match was Kennesaw State vs UGA and Georgia Tech vs GA Southern. Kennesaw State was defeated by UGA 7-0 allowing UGA to advance to the 2009 championship match. On the other side Georgia Tech defeated GA Southern 8-5 allowing them to advance to the championship game.
The men's Sunday games showcased three games. A pivotal 5th and 6th seed game between North Georgia College and Jacksonville state, the semi final match to find next year #3 seed and the final between arch rivals Georgia Tech and the University of Georgia.
Jacksonville State defeated North Georgia College 15-0. The Semi final game between KSU and GA Southern went into many overtimes with a 0-0 score at the end. Both teams had many many opportunities to win this game. In the end the #3 seed was awarded to GA Southern on place kick's after they entered the 7th sudden death overtime sequence.
The final game between Georgia Tech and UGA was a heart stopper. Both teams played extremely well. GT's rucked extremely well with both their forwards and back's. GT also defended well as they had throughout the tournament with a solid backline that was able to shut down UGA's attacks. UGA dominated GT in every aspect of the lineout and both teams kicked very well for territory in a fast moving attacking game that went from end to end. In the end Georgia Tech won 10-6 and received the first place trophy. Congratulations to Georgia Tech RFC.
In all it was a good weekend. The skill level of our collegiate sides are getting better and better with an noticeable infusion of players that come with high school experience to join their respective University. The future looks very good for the GRU.
Final Men's Standings; Georgia Tech, UGA, GA Southern, Kennesaw State, Jacksonville State, North Georgia College, Armstrong Atlantic University, Auburn University, Emory University.

Women's Tournament
Great showing by all the women's teams! When dealing with the obstacles of fall break and unfavorable weather, the women of the GRU were able to make a good showing at the tournament. 2009 marked the first year that Emory Women were officially entered into the GRU tournament. Lets continue to spread the word and get more women's teams involved in this great sport. It was a hard battle throughout Saturday and Sunday. Every team played every hour, maxing out on rugby stamia. Throughout Sunday the women of the GRU continued to fight for the GRU title. It came down to UGA and Georgia Tech in the championship on Sunday. Tech came out strong scoring first in the game, but UGA was determined to take home that trophy. UGA came back to score, but the missed conversation cost them. Georgia Tech ended up taking home the title of the best team in the Georgia Rugby Union after a long battle ending with a score 7-5. Emory and Georgia Southern competed for the title of 3rd and 4th place on Sunday, with Emory proving that they can make a difference in their first year. Congratulations to all teams! Thank you for a very successful and fun tournament. I can't wait until next year, when more teams will be in the GRU and the battle can ensue again! Ranks from GRU Tournament 1. Georgia Tech 2. UGA 3. Emory 4. Georgia Southern Tia D GRU Women's Collegiate Director |
